Onsen and Car Camping in Kansai: 77 Hot-Spring Michi-no-eki, RV Parks and Auto Campsites, and a First Autumn Trip for 2026
If you are sleeping in a campervan for the first time, make a hot spring the destination. It settles the question of where to wash, and you go to bed still warm from the bath. In the DREAMAX Connect dataset, the six Kansai prefectures (Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Nara, Wakayama and Shiga) have 77 overnight-capable stops with an onsen on site, as of September 2026. Only three of them, though, have a 24-hour toilet that we could confirm on an official page. This guide sets out how those 77 break down, names 20 of them, lays out two three-day autumn routes from Osaka, and explains the rules for michi-no-eki and bath times, sticking to what we could actually verify.

Why onsen and car camping suit a first campervan trip
Before they rent a campervan, most people worry about two things: where do we wash, and will we be cold at night? Choose stops with an onsen on site and both are answered at once. You park, walk over to the bath, and climb back into the van while you are still warm. There is no hunting for a public bath across an unfamiliar town after dark, and no driving with wet hair.
Autumn days in Kansai are mild, but in the hills the temperature drops sharply after sunset. Getting into bed after a long soak makes the whole night different. A hot bath plus a heater that runs on battery takes most of the worry out of a first cold night.
There is a planning benefit too. A bath has opening hours, so the latest time you need to arrive decides itself, and you work the rest of the day back from there: where to sightsee, where to shop for dinner. Campervan travel is free-form, and on a first trip the day can easily drift. Making the onsen the end point of each day keeps the schedule realistic.
The numbers: 77 hot-spring stops in Kansai (September 2026)
DREAMAX Connect is the road-trip database we run. Of the more than 3,990 overnight-capable stops it lists across Japan, 747 have a hot spring in their facility data (as of September 2026). Every stop carries the official page it is based on and the date that page was retrieved.
Narrow it to the six Kansai prefectures (Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Nara, Wakayama and Shiga) and there are 77 overnight-capable stops with an onsen on site, as of September 2026. By type, that is 52 RV parks, 13 michi-no-eki (roadside stations) and 12 auto campsites. The places where you can actually spend the night are the RV parks and the auto campsites, 64 in all. The 13 michi-no-eki are for resting and napping, and that difference matters enough that it gets its own explanation further down.
By prefecture, Hyogo leads by a distance with 29, followed by Wakayama with 14, Kyoto 11, Shiga 11 and Nara 10. Osaka Prefecture itself has only two. In practice, then, once you collect the van in Osaka you head north to Tajima, south to the Kii coast, or east into Nara and Shiga. Each direction is roughly one to three hours from central Osaka, close enough to be in a bath on the first evening.

Only 3 of the 77 have an attested 24-hour toilet
The thing people worry about most when sleeping in a vehicle is the toilet in the middle of the night. We read each stop's official page. Where it says the toilets are open 24 hours, we mark the stop as attested; where it does not, we mark it as unconfirmed. As of September 2026, 3 of the 77 Kansai stops are attested and the remaining 74 are unconfirmed.
Unconfirmed does not mean there is no toilet, or that it is locked at night. It means the official page does not say so, or says it too vaguely to rely on. We will not write that something exists when we have not been able to check it. If a night-time toilet matters to you, check the facility's official page before you set off, or ask us.
Across Japan, 439 stops have their night-time facts (a 24-hour toilet, whether overnight stays are allowed, lighting) backed by a quote from an official page, as of September 2026. None of this comes from staff visiting with a tape measure; it is a sourced record, and the source is always the official page.
Two of the three are michi-no-eki. Even with a toilet you can count on, a michi-no-eki is not somewhere to spend the night. Of the three, the one you can choose as a place to sleep is the RV park at Susami: RV Park Michi-no-eki Susami.

Hyogo (29 stops): from the Tajima highlands to the tip of Awaji Island
Hyogo has the most of any Kansai prefecture, 29 as of September 2026. Up north in Tajima, michi-no-eki and auto campsites cluster around the Kannabe highlands. On the Seto Inland Sea side is Michi-no-eki Aioi Peron-jo; north of Kobe is Michi-no-eki Kobe Fruit Flower Park Ozo; and at the southern tip of Awaji Island is Michi-no-eki Fukura. Mountain baths and seaside baths are both on the menu here.
The closest to Osaka is the Kobe Fruit Flower Park Ozo michi-no-eki in Kobe's Kita ward, which works well as a last soak on the day you return the van. The two places we can name for the night are Yunohara Onsen Auto Campsite, near Kannabe, and Silk Onsen Campsite in eastern Tajima. Michi-no-eki Tajima Rakuza is one of the three stops with an attested 24-hour toilet. For opening hours, prices and winter operation, follow each stop's page through to the official information.

Wakayama (14 stops): Kumano and the Kii coast
Wakayama has 14, as of September 2026, and two of the three attested stops are here: Michi-no-eki Nachi at Nachikatsuura in Kumano, and RV Park Michi-no-eki Susami on the southern Kii coast. Susami is an RV park, so although it sits within a michi-no-eki, it is a place where you can stay the night.
South of Shirahama is Michi-no-eki Tsubaki Hana-no-yu, and in Kitayama, the Wakayama exclave surrounded by Nara and Mie, is Michi-no-eki Okutoro. They slot into a trip down the Kisei Expressway for two nights by the sea, or into a mountain crossing from Nara into Kumano. The michi-no-eki are for resting and napping only, so move on to an RV park such as Susami, or to an auto campsite, for the night.

Kyoto (11 stops): a lakeside bath in Tamba and an RV park near the city
Kyoto has 11, as of September 2026, and we name two. Michi-no-eki Springs Hiyoshi, in the Hiyoshi district of Nantan, stands beside the Hiyoshi Dam and has a hot spring. StandOut KYOTO, south-west of the city centre, is an RV park and a candidate for the nights of a Kyoto sightseeing trip.
In autumn-leaves season the car parks and roads of central Kyoto are packed. You will have an easier time seeing the city sights by train or bus, and using the campervan for the hot springs outside town. Springs Hiyoshi is a michi-no-eki, so rest and nap there only, and sleep at an RV park or an auto campsite.

Nara (10 stops): Route 169 towards Yoshino and Odaigahara, and the eastern highlands
Nara has 10, as of September 2026. Along Route 169, the road that runs from Yoshino down to Kumano, are Michi-no-eki Suginoyu Kawakami and Michi-no-eki Yoshinoji Kamikitayama. Kamikitayama is the village Odaigahara stands in, and in a typical year the autumn colour on Odaigahara peaks in late October.
Further east are Michi-no-eki Hari T.R.S, on the upland along the Meihan National Highway, and Michi-no-eki Ise Honkaido Mitsue near the Mie border. All four of the Nara stops named here are michi-no-eki: good for a bath and a rest, but for the night move on to an RV park or an auto campsite. The rest of Nara's stops are in the stop directory.

Shiga (11 stops): onsen auto campsites close to Osaka
Shiga has 11, as of September 2026. All three we name are auto campsites, so the bath and the bed are in one place: Junibo Onsen Auto Campsite in Konan, Ogawara Onsen Kamoshika Auto Campsite in the hills of Tsuchiyama in Koka, and Five Ocean Oku-Biwako Campsite at the northern tip of Lake Biwa.
Junibo is about 1 hour 15 minutes from central Osaka and Kamoshika about 1 hour 30, so even if you collect the van after lunch you arrive in daylight. If you want to try a single night first, that short drive is the best reassurance there is. Check each official page for whether you need to book, the check-in time and winter opening.

Two three-day autumn routes from Osaka, linking the baths
Both routes work the same way: bathe in the afternoon at a stop with an onsen, then sleep at an RV park or auto campsite. Drive times are approximate, measured from central Osaka, and leave out breaks and traffic. Autumn colour moves with altitude and with the year, so check this season's progress in our Kansai autumn-leaves route before you go.
The northern route is highland air and the bathhouse circuit of Kinosaki Onsen; the southern route is two nights at a seaside RV park with a day trip into Kumano. Staying two nights in one place lets you leave the bedding and bags out, which first-timers usually find far easier.
- North, day 1: collect in Osaka and take the Chugoku, Maizuru-Wakasa and Kita-Kinki Toyooka expressways to Michi-no-eki Tajima Rakuza (about 2 hours) for a bath, then on to Yunohara Onsen Auto Campsite (about 30 minutes) for night one
- North, day 2: Michi-no-eki Kannabe Kogen (about 10 minutes), then Kinosaki Onsen, known for its circuit of public bathhouses (about 40 minutes), then Silk Onsen Campsite in eastern Tajima (about 50 minutes) for night two
- North, day 3: head south on the Maizuru-Wakasa and Chugoku expressways to Michi-no-eki Kobe Fruit Flower Park Ozo for a last soak (about 2 hours), then into Osaka to return the van (about 50 minutes)
- North, with a fourth day: on day 3 go instead to Michi-no-eki Fukura at the southern tip of Awaji Island (about 3 hours), find an RV park on Awaji for night three in the stop directory, and cross the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge back to Osaka on day 4 (about 1 hour 30 minutes)
- South, day 1: collect in Osaka and take the Hanwa and Kisei expressways to Michi-no-eki Tsubaki Hana-no-yu (about 2 hours 30 minutes) for a bath, then on to RV Park Michi-no-eki Susami (about 30 minutes) for night one
- South, day 2: via Kushimoto to Michi-no-eki Nachi in Kumano (about 1 hour 15 minutes); see Nachi Falls and walk the Daimon-zaka stretch of the Kumano Kodo, bathe at Nachi, then drive back to Susami for night two (about 1 hour 15 minutes)
- South, day 3: the Kisei and Hanwa expressways back to Osaka (about 2 hours 30 minutes) to return the van
- South, with a fourth day: go out by Route 169 through Nara instead. Osaka to Michi-no-eki Suginoyu Kawakami (about 1 hour 45 minutes), Michi-no-eki Yoshinoji Kamikitayama (about 40 minutes), Michi-no-eki Okutoro (about 40 minutes) and Michi-no-eki Nachi (about 1 hour). For the night in between, do not sleep at a michi-no-eki; pick an RV park or auto campsite from the stop directory

Rules and manners for onsen car camping
Hot-spring stops are not reserved for people sleeping in vehicles. Locals come for an evening bath and drivers stop to rest, all in the same place. Keep to the following and your first night will go smoothly, both for you and for everyone around you.
- Bath hours differ by facility, and most close at around 21:00 to 22:00. Last entry can be earlier still. Always arrive within bathing hours, and check the time on the facility's official page
- Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism defines a michi-no-eki as a rest facility. A nap in the car park is fine; using it as your accommodation for the night is not. Spend the night at an RV park or auto campsite
- At a michi-no-eki, do not put out chairs or tables, open an awning or use any flame. It is not a campsite
- Do not leave the engine running. The heater and the fridge run on the battery
- Keep it quiet at night: doors, voices and music
- Take your rubbish with you. Do not fill the bins at a michi-no-eki or bathhouse with the waste from your trip
- Only empty grey water where it is permitted
- Winter closures, whether you need to book and check-in times all differ by facility. Check the official page

Handover in central Osaka and at Kansai International Airport is free; you cover only the tolls and fuel for that leg. Bookings close at 12:00 JST, and you can collect as soon as the next day. There is no minimum rental length, so a single night at an onsen campsite in Shiga books straight through.

Can we sleep at a michi-no-eki?
A michi-no-eki is defined by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as a rest facility. You may nap to recover from driving, but you are asked not to use it as accommodation. For the night, choose an RV park or an auto campsite. Of Kansai's 77 hot-spring stops, 64 are RV parks or auto campsites (as of September 2026).
How late are the baths open?
It varies by facility; most close at around 21:00 to 22:00, and last entry can be earlier. Check the official information via each stop's page and plan to arrive within bathing hours. If you realise you will not make it, message us on WhatsApp or LINE before 20:00 and we will find the nearest 24-hour public bath or kenko land.
Is there a 24-hour toilet?
As of September 2026, 3 of Kansai's 77 hot-spring stops have a 24-hour toilet confirmed on an official page: Michi-no-eki Tajima Rakuza, Michi-no-eki Nachi and RV Park Michi-no-eki Susami. The other 74 are unconfirmed, which means we could not verify it on an official page, not that there is no toilet. Check each facility's official page before you go.
Does onsen car camping work in winter?
Some facilities close for the winter, and mountain roads can be snowy. Check opening periods on each official page. Our Happy 1 Turbo and Treasure 1 run studless winter tyres as standard from November to April, and the Happy 1 Turbo can run its heater with the engine off.
Do we need to book?
Whether an RV park or auto campsite needs a booking varies by facility. Autumn-leaves weekends fill up, so once you have picked where to sleep, check the official page early. Michi-no-eki have no booking system and are for resting and napping only. Campervan bookings close at 12:00 JST for collection as soon as the next day.
