Guidelines of

Driving safely

Follow traffic regulations and drive with care.

 Traffic Rules in Japan
  • Drivers must keep to the left side of the road.
  • Vehicles turning left get the right-of-way. If you are turning right, the oncoming vehicle has the right-of-way. Wait until the oncoming vehicle has gone straight or turned left before you turn right. Pedestrians always have the right-of-way, whether you are turning left or right, so pay extra attention to pedestrians when turning.
  • Pedestrians always have right of way. Before turning left or right, if you find pedestrians passing at a crosswalk or pedestrians at a crosswalk without a traffic light, stop and wait for them to cross at the road. When bicycles pass at a crosswalk, wait for them in the same way.
  • You must stop before crossing railroad tracks. Come to a full stop and check that no trains are approaching from the right or left.
  • Both the driver and passengers must wear seatbelts while driving.
  • The driver must ensure that any passenger younger than 6 years old is seated in a child seat.
  • No passing in the area covered in orange line.
  Speed Limit
  • Maximum speed limits for vehicles are shown on traffic signs and road markings. You must drive safely within the specified speed limits.
  • When there are no signs or markings indicating the speed limit, drivers of regular-sized automobiles must obey the speed limits of 60 km/h on ordinary roads, and 100 km/h on expressways.
Remarks: The maximum speed limit for three-wheel vehicles (e.g., BRP Can-Am Ryker Rally) is 80 km/h on expressways.
  • Speeding violations occur when a vehicle is driven above the specified speed limit. Point penalties range from 1 to 12, and fines range from ¥9,000 to ¥35,000, depending on the speed exceeded.
